PROJECT 1 -
On-site Observation Journal

Individually, we were to produce an on-site journal of Sungai Buloh Leprosy Valley of Hope. We went on a visit to Valley of Hope and observed the physical and non-physical context of it. We drew some sketches to record the on-site context and compile these sketches into a journal.

I had gained several experiences through this assignment, especially when we were able to go for site visit after a long time. Other than that, being able to explore and observe the culture and traditions of Sungai Buloh Leprosy Valley of Hope was really a special experience for me. I was glad that I am able to sketch the elements of this place, and I hope I can make and effort to preserve and conserve this settlement in the future by sharing the stories and values of this place.

PROJECT 2 -
Report

As a group, we were required to conduct a historical research on the settlement of Sungai Buloh Leprosy Valley of Hope. Our research covers the historical values, cultural values as well as the architecture values of Valley of Hope. During the site visit, we had studied the architecture of the settlement and several interviews with the residents there were conducted as well. These information were then compiled together into this research report.

Through this assignment, I was able to learn more about the history, culture and traditions of Sungai Buloh Leprosy Valley of Hope. I was able to review several literatures of Valley of Hope, where I get to know even more about the place. This assignment also reminded me the importance to preserve and conserve heritage buildings and settlements in order for them to not lose their value.

PROJECT 3 -
Measured Drawings

As a group, we were required to further study the assigned settlement in detail during the site visit, which includes observing the architecture, study the planning of the layout of the settlement as well as recording the measurements of these settlement. Later, a digital 3D model was created and drawings of the settlement was produced.

Through this assignment, I was able to study the settlements of leprosy patients which further developed into residential settlement later. The layout of these settlements, from the living area to the toilet, even the surrounding common areas were taken into consideration while planning. This shows how Valley of Hope had used a more humane way in organizing and settling down leprosy patients, creating a space where they can call home. The structures of these settlement may look simple, but it was carefully planned out to provide a comfortable place for the patients. Hence, it is important for us to preserve and conserve this heritage settlement and its historical values as well as its architectural values.
